Among the Committee's first tasks was the conducting of a
survey detailing the archiving of recordings held by 12
major recording companies. Following the completion of
that survey, the Committee met with representatives of the
labels to discuss ongoing archival priorities and problems,
and to begin working toward standards and solutions.
The Recording Academy's Archive and Preservation
Committee is the beginning of a carefully considered,
coordinated effort to encourage dialogue among the
owners of these masters regarding setting goals and
standards for the storage, retrieval, research and
preservation of American music. With an estimated 10 to
15 million performances having been committed to tape or
disc already, and millions more on the way, the
identification and preservation of "at risk" recordings
represents an enormous challenge. But the rewards, in terms of
our musical heritage and cultural history, will be measureless.
